An interesting historical argument one writer advances is that the spirit of the punk and postpunk era (and in all movements within those eras) can be traced back to any of five spiritual predecessors: David Bowie, Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, Kraftwerk and Brian Eno.

Spirit?  Spirit?  What on earth are you burbling on about?

That is a start but I think it goes back earlier than Bowie.  I’ll give it to Iggly Pop.  Early stooges (1969, Fun House) is raw punk.  You can not forget about the Kinks either.  I would say That many bands from the 60s flirted with punk sounds that were just taken and used in full force with other bands later on.  I feel that I am biased though because I feel that many bands who get the credit don’t really deserve as much as they received in music history.

Of course, there were many other antecedents. Silver Apples and Captain Beefhart would be worthy additions.
